Hello and welcome to my new site: weightedwords.ca! Arguably Intelligent, the previous incarnation, is no more, though its URL will redirect to this site until it expires early next year.
With the new name comes a new look. Isn’t it fancy? I think it’s fancy. While I might make some minor changes to it going forward, I think the overall theme is here to stay.
So what do these changes mean? Why did I make them? Why haven’t I posted anything in close to two months? All good questions.
I’ll start with the third one. It has indeed been almost two months since my last post, in which I commented that life is stressful and busy, but I wanted to write more things on this site in a way that worked for me.
All of that is still true! I’ve had some personal stuff come up in the past two months that I might discuss on another occasion, but I still want to keep writing.
In fact, I should be able to write more things here from now on, but the things themselves are going to change a bit. You see that tagline below the site title? “Prose, poetry, and articles by Mitchell Gunn?”
It’s time to diversify my online portfolio. Creative writing has always been a passion of mine, so I’m planning to share some pieces here that I think people might be interested in — mainly poems, short stories, that sort of thing.
I’ll continue to write articles like I did before, and I’ll probably even toss in some “blog-esque” personal anecdotes here and there too. Think of this as the site becoming more well-rounded, exploring different avenues, broadening its horizons.
I’m making these changes because I want this site to play a more substantial role in my life, particularly since I’ll be graduating from Mount Allison next year. I don’t know exactly what I’ll do afterward, but I know that I’m going to keep writing and that I want to share my writing with other people. This site is one way to do that.
There are other ways, of course, which leads me to an important announcement: thanks to an arts grant from the J.E.A. Crake Foundation, I’m going to be releasing a modest collection of poetry and short stories!
I’m going to keep most of the details under wraps for right now, but the collection (which will be an actual, physical “book-object-thing”) will be available sometime in early April. I’ll probably give more info in the next couple of weeks.
So yeah, that’s another reason why I’m diversifying things a bit on the site. Don’t worry if you aren’t a fan of creative writing; like I said, I’ll be posting a variety of stuff, including the sort of articles I’ve written here in the past.
That’s where things stand right now. I’m really excited to see how all of this turns out — a little nervous too, but mostly excited. For now, I hope you’ll keep reading, because I definitely plan to keep writing.
P.S. Keep it on the down-low, but if you want a sneak peek, here’s one of the poems from the collection.
Skin tears like errant paper
Red pen corrections, ink spilling
Stained pages fall away
Bright cascade, accidental
Bones crack along fault lines
Collapse under force
Woven strands of muscle
Come undone, frayed ropes
Weary filaments writhing
Tugging on loose frames
Stay still for a moment
Do not scream or moan
Or rue circumstance
Stitch the gaps
Repair the infrastructure
Mend the mistakes
It can all be undone
With patience and care
No damage is permanent.
